One possible alternate avenue, depending on where you live, would be to visit a library which carries the Novel and Short Story Writer's Market book. You could peruse this there and make a list of potential markets to research on the web, etc.

If a library isn't handy, you could even buy an older year's edition somewhere like Amazon or Half.com and use it as a resource.

Best of luck however you proceed!

-MichaelMichael Hayneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07653617216453974106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1374335910040167876.post-49684273888074232782013-02-03T22:47:26.018-05:002013-02-03T22:47:26.018-05:00I commiserate with Duotrope's unsuccessful don...I commiserate with Duotrope's unsuccessful donation attempts, but like you, I think that the subscription fees are way too exorbitant. Now that the list of literary magazines are obscured behind the veil of commercialization, getting published is harder. My avenues will be limited, and this impedes my writing profession. Nonetheless, if Duotrope is adamant about implementing this scheme, I will just move on, and get self-published, beholden to no one.Jack Frosthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01571701814617993070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1374335910040167876.post-19485143063204265062012-12-26T21:43:49.437-05:002012-12-26T21:43:49.437-05:00Yes, I'm not upset that they made a switch, bu...Yes, I'm not upset that they made a switch, but I don't think I can justify the expense at this point. After that we take a break to reset, even it it's just a few seconds of staring off into space. He suggested a twenty minutes on, ten minutes off pattern of work. When I was really stuck, I used it to cajole myself into writing: twenty minutes and then you can play a video game for ten minutes! It worked. This may apply better (in some ways) to short fiction than longer forms, but earlier this year I scheduled a "Revising Day" where I took a vacation day off work and went to a bookstore/coffee shop and sat down and made final revisions to stories and got them sent out the door. It worked very well and while I can't justify the day off work very often, I think it might be time to do this again before long, as a way of trying to help myself get caught up.Michael Hayneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07653617216453974106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1374335910040167876.post-6420607148992434162012-08-09T21:54:06.517-04:002012-08-09T21:54:06.517-04:00Hi Michael, just wanted to pop by and say how much...Hi Michael, just wanted to pop by and say how much I've been enjoying your blog, this post especially! If there's something i need to research, i make a note and do that research once the writing session is done.

I also make sure my writing session is a defined length of time.
